The Academy of Surgical Educators (ASE) aims to foster and
promote the pursuit of excellence in surgical education. It does
this by advising the College on the strategic direction needed to
develop and sustain a strong culture of professional development in
surgical education. It also seeks to encourage innovation and
scholarship in surgical education, training and professional
development in order to enhance its effectiveness.
The academy administration and governance comprises:
- Academy of Surgical Educators Board
- Academy of Surgical Educators Advisory Committee
- Dean of Education
- senior project/research officers
- Executive Assistant to the Dean of Education.
As the academy gains momentum, it aims to develop an evidence
base to progress excellence in surgical education for Trainees and
Fellows.

Conjoint Medical Education Seminar
This Seminar was designed for Senior Health Educators, Policy
Makers, Policy Advisors, Regulators and others working in the area
of Specialist Education and Training. Participants included
delegates from the three host Colleges, other Medical Colleges,
Associations, Councils and Government.

Goals
The academy has identified 5 goals that will guide its strategic
direction:
- Review the effectiveness of RACS education and assessment
processes in meeting College strategic educational goals.
- Ensure RACS competencies and their assessment are imbedded in
Surgical Education and Training (SET) courses.
- Develop of educational opportunities for Fellows and Trainees
in the competencies.
- Expand cohort of surgeons with educational expertise and ensure
their involvement in the academy.
- Advocate for and contribute to the development of improved
web-based e-learning.
Membership
We invite you to apply for Academy membership. Membership is
open to Fellows, Trainees and non-surgeons who contribute to
surgical education programs and have an interest in increasing
their capacity to deliver surgical education.
Many supervisors and trainers have an investment in enhancing
the future of surgery. Membership of the academy will provide you
with an opportunity to share your creative ideas and solutions for
advancing surgical education and, in doing so, influencing the
strategic direction of the College. Your contributions will be
highly valued.
There are 2 levels:
- Members are people with a strong interest in medical
education.
- Faculty members need to have a tertiary qualification or
equivalent experience in surgical education. Fellows and others who
are essential to the delivery of the educational mission of the
College.
To apply for membership, please provide the following:
- a covering letter explaining your reasons for applying for
membership (either member or faculty member)
- your curriculum vitae (no longer than 2 pages)
- two referees
- your RACS ID number.
