Department of Surgery - Alice Springs Hospital

Alice Springs Hospital has a busy Emergency Department with 34,000 attendances per annum, a third of who are admitted. The Department of Surgery has a major interest in Trauma Management and there will be an opportunity to do some specialist outreach work in remote communities.  Trainee registrars rotate from major teaching hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney. The hospital is affiliated with Flinders University, University of New South Wales, Sydney University and the University of Queensland.

Waitemata DHB serves the largest District Health Board population in New Zealand and has a large General Surgery Department that provides healthcare services in the Northern and Western Districts of Auckland.

Long term Ophthalmologist
Dili, Timor Leste

Are you up for the challenge? Based at the National Eye Centre, Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares in Dili and working closely with in-country staff, your position will involve:

  • Working closely with the Ophthalmology team in leading ophthalmology services at the National Eye Centre
  • Supporting district outreach services
  • Assisting in the management and running of the Eye Departments in the district hospitals
  • Providing in-country training, mentoring and supervision for East Timorese doctors, nurses and other health personnel
  • Engaging in surgical audits and conducting public health research
  • Liaising with and supporting visiting eye teams from Australia
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of eye treatment protocols and standards of care

Western HealthUpper GI & HPB Surgery Fellow (UGIG Unit)

The Upper GI / HPB unit at Western Health consists of 8 Surgeons who work across all three (3) campuses - Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown.  The major cases are all completed at the Footscray Campus.

The Fellow is expected to be involved in the receiving roster with the Consultants back up.  The Upper GI / HPB Fellow is also expected to be involved in non-clinical duties such as education and training of Junior Medical Staff as well as representing JMS interests by acting as a representative on one or more committees such as the JMS Operations Management Committee, the JMS Post Graduate Medical Education Committee, Adverse Outcomes Committee and other relevant working parties.

You will contribute to the provision of effective clinical care and management of patients of the Hunter New England Local Health District referred for cardiothoracic surgery and investigation. Privileges will encompass planned and unplanned activity in inpatients and outpatients.  To be successful in this role, you must have a FRACS or equivalent as provided for in the Salaried Senior Medical Practitioners' Award or the Health Insurance Act of 1973, with a specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Postgraduate Fellow in Breast Cancer Clinical Research

Applications are sought from postgraduates undertaking training in surgical, medical or radiation oncology, molecular biology or pathology for this new position. The successful applicant will be involved with the management of breast cancer patients, especially patients considered for or enrolled in clinical trials, under the supervision of the relevant surgical, medical or radiation oncologists or molecular biology or pathology department heads. The fellow will have an active involvement in the current trials program of the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group. The successful applicant will be encouraged to attend state and national workshops on clinical trial processes, and present at meetings. At the end of the fellowship it is anticipated that the fellow will be thoroughly familiar with all aspects of breast cancer clinical trials including design, management, analysis and reporting, with a view to establishing a career in oncology clinical research in their chosen specialty.

Essential Criteria

  • Primary medical degree, registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency AHPRA).
  • Completion or near completion of postgraduate training in surgical, radiation or medical oncology, molecular biology or pathology and eligibility for Fellowship of the relevant Royal College within the next 6 months.
  • Demonstrable capacity in the efficient and effective day-to-day management of cancer patients.
  • Demonstrable experience, and ability in, and commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and a strong commitment to further education and training.
  • Commitment to a multidisciplinary approach to patient management.
  • Commitment to clinical trials and cancer research.  
  • Demonstrable excellence in written and oral English, with good communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills including a high level of diplomacy, tact and integrity.
  • High level attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
  • Clear understanding of the importance of confidentiality and principles of equity and a willingness and capacity to implement equity plans and policies.
  • Commitment to the philosophy, mission and values of Little Company of Mary Health Care as it applies to the Hospital and the ability and desire to uphold these principles.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in or knowledge of programs directed at improving the organisation and delivery of care in oncology.
  • Experience in the coordination of grant applications and/or tender submissions.
  • Prior experience in clinical trials and cancer research.
  • An understanding of the regulatory and legal requirements for collaboration with International Clinical Trial Groups.
  • Current driver's licence.

Salary & Conditions

In accordance with the NSW (Non Declared) AHO Staff Specialist Agreement, Postgraduate Fellow, currently $3132.20 per week (Current Rate), depending on completion of postgraduate studies. The position will initially be for a period of 12 months with eligibility for reappointment up to a maximum term of two (2) years. The position is expected to commence in 2013 but suitable candidates who wish to commence at an earlier time point will be considered.

EGHS is a rural health service in Western Victoria, serving a population of 12,000.  It has over 3,000 inpatient episodes and 3,500 Emergency Department attendances a year.

Resident medical services include General Practice, Obstetrics, Anaesthetics and Medicine.  Visiting specialist services include Gynaecology, Urology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and ENT Surgery.

EGHS has two operating theatres providing 10 operating sessions a week.  It is supported by a Radiology Department and Pathology.

Deakin University and The University of Melbourne's Rural Clinical School have a node in Ballarat, with medical students completing their clinical studies at EGHS.

You should have a primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and FRACS(or postgraduate qualifications, training and experience in General Surgery assessed by the College as suitable for this position).

Since 2002, North West Private Hospital has offered a one year Fellowship in Breast and Endocrine Surgery in conjunction with the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.  The Fellowship is offered under the supervision and guidance of Professor Ian Gough and other surgeons working at both hospitals. Professor Gough has more than 30 years experience in Breast and Endocrine Surgery.

The Fellowship offers an outstanding training in Breast and Endocrine Surgery with a substantial clinical work load in dedicated out patient clinics, operating sessions and weekly multi-disciplinary meetings. All previous fellows are now continuing in successful consultant careers. The holder of the fellowship will also be encouraged to participate in clinical research programs and will be offered the opportunity to initiate clinical/collaborative research study.

This fellowship in Breast and Endocrine Surgery is to be offered again for 2013.

The Fellowship is for one year atNorth West PrivateHospital. This Fellowship provides exposure to the private hospital sector atNorth West PrivateHospitalin conjunction with public care at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The fellow will also work in the Centre for Breast Health at the Royal Women's Hospital and in the Endocrine Surgery service at theRoyalBrisbaneHospital.

You will hold a FRACS; be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Queensland; have recently completed advanced training in general surgery, and be seeking further experience in breast and endocrine surgery. You will work under the supervision of three specialist surgeons and assist with private surgical operations.

You will require personal medical indemnity cover, but employer indemnity will be offered by Ramsay Health Care Hospitals and Queensland Health respectively.

The remuneration provided by the Fellowship is $75,000 AUD per annum. Income will be supplemented from private surgical assisting.
