About ANZAPSThe Australasian Association of Paediatric Surgeons was formed in May 1979 to represent Paediatric Surgeons training and practising in Australia and New Zealand and in overseas postings. Paediatric Surgery is the specialty that includes surgeons who have specialist training in the management of children (usually up to the age of about 15 years) who have conditions that may require surgery. Specialist paediatric surgeons normally deal with non-cardiac thoracic surgery, general paediatric surgery and paediatric urology. Their responsibilities include involvement in the antenatal management of congenital structural abnormalities, neonatal surgery and oncological surgery of children. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons has a specific training program in paediatric surgery, including a Fellowship examination in paediatric surgery. Increasingly, paediatric surgeons are involved in outreach programs to provide a service to smaller centres. The Outreach Program is New Zealand is well developed incorporating the greater Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Christchurch regions. In many of these places, surgery is performed as well as outpatient clinis, but in others, clinics are only performed. The New Zealand Society of Paediatric Surgeons (affiliated) to the Australasian Association of Paediatric Surgeons) liaises with the Ministry of Health to develop the national paediatric surgical service. The current Outreach Program in Australia involving Newcastle, Albury/Wodonga and Shepparton/Echuca continues to be successful and expanding in all centres. The Outreach Program is coordinated by Mr Keith Stokes. Click on the links below for more information regarding: |
